Early morning, wandering through the streets around my hotel, searching for breakfast while everyone else hurries to work.

The mix of buildings feels as complex as the Kanji characters.

Finally found a nice breakfast place. Everyone here wears a suit for work and everyone seems to have black pants and a white shirt. Oh and of course everyone is quiet and reads.

After 8 hours of watching CG animation/effects/visualizations etc... we grabbed a cab to ave dinner.

Restaurant Kurosawa. Owned by Kurosawa's son. Lovely and traditional from the outside as well as from the inside.

Waiting for the food, everything looks so neat. And the food, of course, was unbelievably tasty.

A short drink, or two, before falling into bead and hopefully sleeping through the night without any sudden jetlag caused, middle of the night, wake ups.

Crossing the pacific

The beauty of the view never ceases to amaze me.
First time in my life that I am flying west to get to the east !
Outside its still bright and sunny but in the plane they switched to 'let's pretend its night' mode.
After thousands of miles of pacific ocean we descend onto japan, passing, just before we land, over these beautiful golf courses.
I can never tell how much time I spend in the plane, it feels as if just a few hours passed and at the same time as if I spend days in that plane.

Hhhmmm... I hope I didn't forget anything. Its so little that it looks as if something is missing.
Waiting for boarding I listen to the Japanese anouncer from the speakers and remember what a beautifull melody, rythm and tonality Japanese has. How lovely will the next few days be, surrounded by pure melody, devoid of meaning. (At least for me )

Yosemite. Beautiful, if it weren't for all the tourists, like me. Still it is quiet something, and the farther away from the touristic hotspots you get, the more remote the streets and the less touristic the towns, the closer it smells and looks and feels like the old goldrush founding times of the late 19th century.

Up north, about an one and a half hour drive from San Francisco, in Monte Rio, around two dozens of Berhards friends secretly gather in a restaurant to surprise him for his birthday while he expected to spend a quiet evening with Amy. When he came in it seemed to take him quiet a few minutes to realize what was going on, so happy to see all his friends gathered around.

Winter, it's supposed to be winter. I keep hearing about snow in Germany, but here, blue sky. Christmas music plays everywhere and christmas lights are being wrapped around everything to the extend that it feels like a desperate try to make the palm trees disappear and have it feel a bit more like Christmas despite the lack of it's traditional attributes. Despite my confusion, I am sitting in the sun, wearing just a sweater and enjoy my Sunday cappucino.

Milk

"Milk" at the Castro. The street outside the cinema with it's symbolic "Castro" sign and the district where it all started is featured in nearly every shot in the movie. The cinema itself is one of the most beautiful ones I know, gorgeously decorated, rather resembling an opera than a cinema and definitely the only one where the line to the mens bathroom is way longer than the one to the womens. Seeing "Milk" here is quiet something special, with some scenes taking place directly outside the theater and with the audience laughing, cheering, booing, applauding and crying to the rise and fall of Harvey Milk.

My first Thanksgiving. It was all far too tasty and now we are all far too full. It think it took over 4 hours to make the turkey (apart from it sleeping in ice cold water with herbs overnight). So now I'm full and sleepy. Still, our plan is to go out for an hour or two to the "Phonebooth". I guess tomorrow I'll just sleep all day. I definitely ate enough for two days.

Everyday on my way home I walk past Luxor Jr. He just stands there, be it sunny, be it rainy and probably even in snow (if it would snow here which is pretty unlikely). His gaze fixed on the ball in front of him, just out of reach. He looks as if he is thinking, pondering some deep thoughts. Walking past him on my way home I have fun guessing what those thoughts might be.

Of course Obama is on all the covers of all newspapers today. Can't wait till next year when he will be sworn into office, the town seems a happier place this morning, people are smiling and talking about yesterday evening. On a sader note, proposition 8 passed, making gay marriages uncostitutional in California and multible other states. I wonder how people can vote for Obama but not vote against proposition 8. I wonder what happens to the people that married since the beginning of the year. This country I now live in seems to still have a long way to go but at least I know that the taxes I pay will be spend more wisely next year and I couldn't think of a more exciting time to be living here.

Afterwards we planned to go to the cinema. Well thats what Amy thought. A while ago Bernhard bought tickets for the Sigur Ros concert at the Greek Theatre (a wooonderful place) in Berkley and she didnt know where we went to until we went up to the place instead of the cinema. And even then she didnt know who would play until they actually started. A fantastic concert in a beautiful place.

Amy was hosting a dinner at her place so I directly drove to her place (Thank god for in-car navigation systems I found it). Actually everyone here is german except for Amy herself. And everyone is either working at Pixar or at Dreamworks. Ah, the world is so small. A very good dinner and such a nice way to end this day of traveling. Arriving in an empty hotel room after such a long travel would have been kinda lonely. Like this the loong day had a perfect ending.

I made it! My plane safely touched ground in San Francisco. I got out and even found Red and Paris waiting for me ! Oh and I had to boot up my laptop to check what the name of the rental car company was where there have a car waiting for me.

U.S.A.

There it is, I touched ground in-where ever it is- in the United States of America and only god knows how long it will be until I leave it again. Oh and customs took of course longer than an hour so they had to rebook my flight. I will stay here now an hour and ten minutes longer than expected. Or, actually, it was kind of to be expected anyhow and I am actually quite happy its just an hour and ten minutes.

In flight entertainments : Spiderwick Chronicles - Really nice creature fx, but somehow boring. Definitely, Maybe - Slow in the beginning and middle, but actually quite nice towards the end. Zelda, Phantom Hourglass - Definitely the best of the in flight entertainments. Oh and a bit more on Murakami's Norwegian Wood which got to a depressing part again so I didnt finish it yet.

Waiting in line to check in Red and Paris I realize that I do not, as I thought before, have a direct flight to San Francisco. (Uhm, what was the reason to go to Frankurt then) Then I realize that I will only have 1 hour to change planes in some stranghe town. When asking the ticket agent if that might not be a little to short he just smiles at me and says 'No, dont worry, it's gonna be fine'. And then he adds 'Oh, by the way, you will need to check out your luggage there and check it back in to the next flight'. If this is really enough time to do all that I ask. 'Yes, of course, it's gonna be fine'...

On my last day we find this absolutely lovely authentic french breakfast place at the market. It has the best cheese ever and serves marmalade with rum for breakfast! This will definitely be my breakfast place of choice whenever I return !

Inside the famous Pinewood Studios :
The 007 stage. Luckily there were no sets anymore, otherwise it would have been impossible to take a peek inside. Its gigantic and huuuge !
The movie gallery, all the classics that were shot here have their beautiful photos lining the walls.In nearly every building production artwork of the movies line the walls. I love the late 70s design of bonds underwater car.
A quite large peaceful and idyllic park is located on one side.

The biggest bluescreen this side of the big pond... and before it the biggest swimming pool, sadly empty at the moment... must have been crazy when they shot the Pirates of the Caribbean here.

Around the corner there was a strange "yogurt" place so we decided to overfill our bellys with desert. And a very good desert it was... supposedly with nearly 0% fat... dont know how they are able to do that... probably it was completely artificial yogurt.

We found a Korean restaurant and i can finally have some kimchi again. And eventhough this place looks kinda trashy, there are only korean people eating here, so this must be a good sign. And it was. The Kimchi was delicious as was my korean bbq,sadly note selfmade in our table but it was gorgeous nevertheless.
